While advancing on Cassino and attacking near Alifo, Company C reached an open field covered by heavy enemy machinegun fire. With his platoon leader, Lieutenant Orva F. Morris, Private First Class Page crawled across the field and reached an irrigation ditch. Four Germans confronted him there. Private First Class Page killed one with a bayonet, shot another, and the other two fled across the field. Lieutenant Morris killed them both as they ran towards him. Another machine gun opened fire and Private First Class Page and Second Lieutenant Morris advanced along the ditch and killed the crew with rifle fire. Private First Class Page wound up in the crater of another machine gun nest while Lieutenant Page crept toward a German observer and shot him in the head. Private First Class Page’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 34th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
