The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) David James O’Rourke, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with an Infantry Company of the 182d Infantry Regiment, 23d Infantry Division (Americal), in action against enemy forces at Bougainville, Solomon Islands, from 10 to 12 March 1944. Assuming command of a company when the company commander was wounded during the initial counterattack on enemy forces which had broken through the American perimeter on Hill 260 at Bougainville, First Lieutenant O’Rourke led a vigorous frontal assault with resolute courage and disregard of personal safety in the sole interest of accomplishing a dangerous and difficult mission. Advancing over open ground and exposed terrain to within 15 yards of the enemy’s dominating, jungle-covered positions, his conspicuous bravery and indomitable courage under heavy fire set a reassuring example which stimulated a determined offensive spirit in his men. Two Japanese pillboxes were destroyed. After fighting off violent attacks and successfully withdrawing his men when heavy casualties were inflicted, he volunteered to lead fresh troops into position for a renewed assault. First Lieutenant O’Rourke again took command when the company commander was fatally wounded and displayed the impelling leadership, heroism, and aggressiveness which had become typical of his conduct in battle. First Lieutenant O’Rourke’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
