First Lieutenant Nummer inspired his company, a leading unit in the attack, to advance after being halted by determined enemy resistance. He went to the most forward position to direct his company, and despite his wounds, refused to leave his company after it had attained its objective. Second Lieutenant Nummer’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 32d Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
