The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Technician Fourth Grade Herman Walter Norris (ASN: 14006089), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 67th Armored Regiment, 2d Armored Division, in action against enemy forces on 16 November 1944. on that date, Technician Fourth Grade Norris’ tank was hit by enemy bazooka fire. With complete disregard to his own personal safety, he ran fifty yards across the field of fire of an enemy pillbox to warn a support wave of tanks coming from the rear, which resulted in the destruction of the pillbox. Traveling through a mine field to the Aid Station, Technician Fourth Grade Norris, in the midst of enemy artillery fire, voluntarily left his tank to evacuate a wounded soldier. Technician Fourth Grade Norris’ extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
