The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Technical Sergeant John Prentice Nimmo (ASN: 6273671), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Headquarters, 1st Battalion, 411th Infantry Regiment, 103d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in the vicinity of Nieder Schlettenbach, Germany, on 21 March 1945. When supporting tanks erroneously fired on our troops, Technical Sergeant Nimmo, disregarding enemy mortar, artillery and small arms fire, ran three hundred yards over open terrain to reach lead tanks. After he succeeded in stopping the fire by hammering on the sides of the tanks, he moved forward under enemy fire to check a bridge. Finding the bridge free of explosives and safe for passage, he returned to the tanks and guided the column to a position from which effective support could be given to the attacking Infantry. Technical Sergeant Nimmo’s actions prevented numerous casualties. His extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
