When the cries of distress from a wounded comrade lying exposed in no-man’s land were causing a breakdown of morale among other members of his unit, Private First Class Newton sacrificed his life in a valiant attempt to rescue him. He braved enemy fire and, with the assistance of a medical aidman carried the wounded soldier for 30 yards towards the rear before he was, himself, fatally wounded. Private First Class Newton’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
