The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) William L. Nelson, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with an Infantry Company of the 334th Infantry Regiment, 84th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Germany, on 23 February 1945. While his Division was spearheading the 9th Army drive, Lieutenant Nelson discovered a group of entrenched enemy positions along a railroad embankment on the flank of his unit which was attacking an enemy town. Realizing that time and surprise were essential elements, he with two other soldiers refused to wait for reinforcements. Although subjected to intense enemy fire, the three men cleared more than 12 of the positions with grenades and rifle fire and captured 60 prisoners. After forcing the withdrawal of the enemy troops defending the outer edge of the town, Captain Nelson made contact with the advancing force, pointed out an avenue of approach, and rejoined his company. Second Lieutenant Nelson’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 84th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
