Headquarters, FIFTH U.S. Army, General Orders No. 72 (May 5, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private First Class Max L. Nebus, Jr. (ASN: 32301558), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 142d Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Italy, on 12 February 1944. After laying down an intense mortar and artillery concentration, a strong German force attacked a position occupied by Private First Class Nebus’ battalion on Mount Castellone, Italy. As his platoon moved forward to engage the enemy in close combat, Private First Class Nebus suddenly observed a German machinegun position threatening his unit’s advance. Alerting other members of his platoon to the menace, he deliberately exposed himself and skillfully worked his way to the enemy position, single-handedly destroying it with hand grenades. In continuing to aid in repulsing the counterattack, Private First Class Nebus was killed by an enemy mortar shell. His extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
