    (Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Samuel J. Murray, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with an Infantry Company of the 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Belgium, on 17 and 18 January 1945. Wounded by gun fire and a bursting shell, First Lieutenant Murray continued to direct his men, through freezing conditions, battling hunger and exhaustion. His efforts contributed immeasurably to the victory of the Allied forces. First Lieutenant Murray’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 2d Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
