The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Corporal Stephen J. Mulhall (ASN: 12006981), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company M, 3d Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. On 9 November 1942, at ***, Algeria, Corporal Mulhall volunteered to go as gunner with his platoon leader and a patrol to investigate the effects of the Company’s fire. The officer halted the vehicle and, as he advanced on foot toward a group of enemy who were taking cover nearby, he and his patrol were immediately fired upon by another group of enemy in a nearby house. The officer and some of the members of the patrol were wounded. Under heavy fire, and with complete disregard for his own personal safety, Corporal Mulhall attempted to rescue the wounded officer. Although mortally wounded in this attempt, he refused aid for himself and ordered the remaining men of the patrol to take care of those who had been wounded. His courage under fire, his devotion to duty and this thoughtfulness for others reflect the highest credit upon him and the military service.
