The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Burt George Moulton (ASN: 20150196), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy, in action against enemy forces while serving with Battery C, 630th Anti Aircraft Artillery (Automatic Weapons) Battalion (Separate), in action against the enemy at Salerno, Italy, on 9 September 1943. Corporal Moulton was aboard a stalled landing craft about 100 yards off the beach at *****, Italy, and while under heavy enemy artillery fire, Corporal Moulton, acting as machine gunner on a truck loaded aboard the craft, opened fire and silenced one machinegun nest. When the coxswain ordered the men and truck into the water, the vehicle stalled when only partially in the water, and Corporal Mouton was forced to abandon his gun position on the truck. He then distinguished himself while enemy fire was being concentrated on the craft by aiding four men who could not swim to reach shore. Corporal Moulton then swam back to the craft, succeeded in starting the motors, and drove it to within 60 yards of the beach with the truck still hanging precariously from the bow. He unloaded the gun crew’s valuable equipment from the truck into the craft, dislodged the truck, and after the craft was driven ashore, he swam to the partially submerged vehicle with a towline. With only his head above the water and constantly harassed by enemy fire, he steered the vehicle while a winch pulled it ashore. Corporal Moulton’s initiative under fire, his devotion to duty and concern for the safety of his comrades at great peril to his own, are deserving of the highest praise. Corporal Moulton’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
