During a bombing mission over the Tempelhof marshalling yards, his bomber had just begun making its bomb run when one flak burst knocked out the Pilot’s windshield and he had to go down into the nose to keep warm. Second Lieutenant Moullen took control of the aircraft and managed to maintain his plane’s position in the formation. As the formation reached the North Sea, the plane’s left rudder cable snapped and, a short time later, the left elevator control was turned off. A fire was then discovered in the top of the right wing and the Pilot gave the order to ditch the aircraft. As Second Lieutenant Moullen tried to slip the plane downward, pieces of the wing began falling off so he feathered engines 2 and 3 to prevent the props from coming off. As the Pilot returned to his seat, the bomber stalled at about 90 mph and hit the sea, bouncing once before starting to sink. As they evacuated, the Pilot’s harness got caught but Lieutenant Moullen helped him onto the left wing. After entering the water, many of the men began slipping beneath the water. When the rescue boat arrived, only Lieutenant Moullen and the Flight Engineer, had managed to survive. Second Lieutenant Moullen’s unquestionable valor in aerial combat is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
