The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Robert William Mott (ASN: 32576495), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company M, 3d Battalion, 128th Infantry Regiment, 32d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at Afua, New Guinea, on 6 August 1944. Hearing calls for help from a seriously wounded comrade lying ahead of a defense area covered by severe enemy machinegun fire in the immediate area, and the fact that another soldier had been forced to withdraw before reaching the wounded man, Staff Sergeant Mott was determined to save his comrade. When within five yards of the man, he sighted one of the machine guns and with great daring stood erect to fire his rifle. The full force of the enemy fire was turned on him, killing him instantly. Grim determination and gallant courage were demonstrated by Staff Sergeant Mott in this action. Staff Sergeant Mott’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
