The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant William W. Mosenteen (ASN: 32046134), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 28th Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 11 July 1944, in the vicinity of *****, Normandy, France. Sergeant Mosenteen was leading a patrol forward from an advanced observation post which covered an open road flanked by hedgerows. His patrol was caught by enemy machine-gun fire and one of his men was wounded while crossing the road. Despite the fact the road was swept by fire Sergeant Mosenteen, with utter disregard to his own personal safety, advanced to the side of the wounded man, brought the man to safety, administered first aid, and then directed the reduction of the enemy machine gun nest. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
