The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class William H. Moriarity (ASN: 36060625), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 3d Chemical Mortar Battalion, 84th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Germany, on 22 April 1945. While under intense enemy fire, Private First Class Moriarity, although realizing the danger involved, volunteered to recover a vitally needed machine gun to repel an enemy attack. He and another soldier dashed for the gun and although wounded he continued forward, gathered the ammunition and returned to his position. Private First Class Moriarity’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
