The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Everett Lee Moore (ASN: 36129112), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with an Infantry Company of the 162d Infantry Regiment, 41st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Salamua, New Guinea, on 31 August 1943. With three other soldiers, Private First Class Moore was given the mission of covering an approach to a ridge occupied by his platoon. When the enemy attacked in strength, two of the men with him were killed. The rifle of the remaining companion jammed and he withdrew to secure another weapon and more grenades. Although seriously wounded, Private First Class Moore continued firing at the advancing enemy. When an enemy missile destroyed his weapon, he seized an automatic rifle from a dead companion and fired on the enemy until he broke the main attack. By his acts of extraordinary heroism, performed in spite of more than twenty wounds which he received, Private First Class Moore held the important position and contributed much to the success of the operations.
