(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Joseph Francis Montore (ASN: 33680378), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with an Infantry Company of the 186th Infantry Regiment, 41st Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at Biak Islands, Schouten Group, on 16 June 1944. During the battle for Mokmer Airdrome on Biak Island, Private First Class Montore, alone, charged a Japanese pillbox, firing his Thompson submachinegun until his ammunition was expended. He then continued the assault with hand grenades until, with his last grenade, he completed destruction of the enemy position. His success in the face of heavy odds enabled the rifle platoons of his company and another company to accomplish their mission of closing a gap between two Infantry battalions. Private First Class Montore’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
