When surrounded by enemy machine gun nests and seeing his men in grave danger, First Lieutenant Monroe left cover and rushed forward in the face of enemy fire and succeeded in killing one machine gunner and putting others out of action so that he might extricate his patrol from their dangerous position. He was wounded during the course of his heroic actions. First Lieutenant Monroe’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
