First Lieutenant Monihan dashed to rescue a wounded man from a knocked-out tank and, while he stood on the tank pulling him out, a second direct hit threw both men to the ground. Nevertheless, First Lieutenant Monihan carried his wounded comrade 300 yards through machine gun fire to safety, firing his carbine with one hand and killing two Germans on the way. Then, while rushing for medical aid, he captured 13 more. First Lieutenant Monihan’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 5th Armored Division, and the United States Army.
