The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant William Joseph Molck (ASN: 35694372), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company C, 735th Tank Battalion, attached to the 1st Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at Fontainbleui, France, on 24 August 1944. During ack on the city the advancing Sherman tanks of Company C were subjected to extremely heavy enemy fire, coming from the east side of the Seine River. The hostile positions could not be located because of unfavorable conditions of the terrain. Sensing the seriousness of the situation, Sergeant Molck, a medium tank commander, and two comrades volunteered to cross the river into enemy territory and attempt a reconnaissance. Realizing the danger involved, the small party under the leadership of Sergeant Molck courageously crossed the river through heavy enemy machine gun, 20-mm., 40-mm., and 80-mm. fire and located several hostile gun emplacements. Accurately gauging the exact locations of these German positions, Sergeant Molck and his men boldly re-crossed the river, despite intense enemy fire. Acting quickly, he skillfully directed the resulting fire that disabled a German tank, knocked out the enemy guns, and killed or wounded all of the enemy crew. The heroic action and brilliant leadership of Sergeant Molck reflects the highest credit upon himself and are in keeping with the finest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
