The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Staff Sergeant Mike Joseph Mogab (ASN: 37075736), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with an Infantry Company of the 63d Infantry Regiment, 6th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces near Rabon, Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 18 January 1945. Staff Sergeant Mogab volunteered to lead his rifle squad in the spearhead of the attack on a well-fortified and previously impregnable enemy hilltop position. After working some distance up the rugged, grassy slope, he and his men were pinned down by heavy small arms, mortar and artillery fire which caused several casualties. Sergeant Mogab detected the locations of several emplacements, moved forward alone over open terrain to a machine gun position and silenced it with his hand grenades. He was returning for more grenades when he sighted another machine gun emplacement. As he stopped to fire at it with his rifle, he was hit in the chest by bullets from a third enemy machine gun. Although his wounds were causing much pain and loss of blood, he rolled into a shallow ditch and crawled back to his men. He refused to be evacuated until he had pointed out several emplacements and directed accurate fire upon them, bringing about the elimination of concentrated enemy resistance. Sergeant Mogab, by his undaunted courage and fighting leadership, inspired his men to greater achievements and made possible the rapid occupation of a strategic position. His extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
