The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Infantry) Merle Milton Mitchell, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 3d Battalion, 157th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in the vicinity of Carreceto, Italy, from 16 to 19 February 1944, in Italy. When the enemy launched a coordinated attack against our positions, supported by dive bombers, heavy caliber artillery, Mark VI tanks, and six-barreled mortars, Captain Mitchell was ordered to occupy defensive positions directly in the path of the German onslaught. While personally directing the organization of these positions, Captain Mitchell was wounded by direct tank fire but refused to be evacuated and continued personal supervision of his front line companies and platoons. Without rest and without treatment of his wounds, he directed the actions of his battalions for four days and nights, until the German thrust had been repulsed. This heroic stand was instrumental in repelling a major German attack. Captain Mitchell’s outstanding leadership, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 45th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
