During the Battle of Attu, Private Minor’s company made an attack on Fish Hook Mountain. Their first objective was the ridge on the southeast slope of the mountain, and enemy fire was so heavy that only a few men, including Private Minor, were successful in reaching the ridge with the first wave. Further forward movement was impeded by a numerically superior enemy force defending strongly-entrenched position, and the company’s position was made tenuous by heavy enemy rifle and machine gun fire from the front and rear flanks. Private Minor and five other men volunteered to storm the enemy positions with grenades and rifles. As they advanced, the leader of the group and another man were killed, and Private Minor was severely wounded in the stomach. Despite his wounds, he immediately took charge of the rest of the group and led them forward under heavy enemy rifle and machine gun fire until he got within grenade distance of the enemy position. After hurling grenades at the enemy strong point and directing the aim of his fellow Infantrymen, he led the charge on the position, wiping out all of the Japanese and holding the position until reinforcements could be moved forward. Private Minor’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
