Headquarters, U.S. Army Forces in the Far East, General Orders No. 34 (June 21, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Staff Sergeant Milan John Miljatovich (ASN: 20647802), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 127th Infantry Regiment, 32d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 28 December 1942, during the Papuan Campaign at Tarakena, New Guinea. Commanding a platoon which had been directed to secure a beachhead on the opposite shore of a creek, Sergeant Miljatovich realized that the assault boats were misdirected and quickly corrected their objective. Although the artillery barrage intended to protect their landing had been lifted, he courageously continued the attack, and when the leading boat was swamped, climbed into the next boat and continued the advance. Approaching the hostile shore, they were met by heavy enemy fire. Although all boats were sunk and many casualties inflicted, Sergeant Miljatovich calmly reorganized his men and by his inspiring personal example regained control of his platoon. Staff Sergeant Miljatovich’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 32d Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
