(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Thomas Alvin Menafee (ASN: 37409006), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company L, 3d Battalion, 106th Infantry Regiment, 27th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, on 24 June 1944. Private Menafee was detailed to guard an officer directing tank fire against the Japanese position that was keeping up a concentrated fire from artillery, mortars, machine guns and small arms. When the officer was wounded, Private Menafee continued directing the tanks, until they were disabled. Then he left them and went forward towards the Japanese position, shot two Japanese in foxholes in his path, and hurled hand grenades wiping out he enemy strong point. Private First Class Menafee’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
