(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Technical Sergeant Charles W. McKeever (ASN: 33425746), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 347th Infantry Regiment, 87th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on the Rhine River in Germany, on 25 March 1945. After crossing the Rhine River, Technical Sergeant McKeever and his squad were pinned down by a German machine gunner. Despite the hail of enemy fire, armed with his rifle and a grenade, he charged the enemy position, killing five enemy soldiers and capturing four others, destroying the enemy machine gun position and enabling his unit to advance. Technical Sergeant McKeever’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 87th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
