The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class John Lawson McInnis (ASN: 34071621), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as a member of the 245th Field Artillery Battalion, 23d Infantry Division (Americal), in action against enemy forces near Abijao, Leyte, Philippine Islands, on 28 February 1945. Private McInnis was a member of a Forward Observation Party holding part of Company E, 164th Infantry Regiment’s perimeter on a strategic hill when the enemy made a violent attack, preceded by machine gun fire, causing some elements of the infantry to withdraw. Although wounded by enemy grenade fragments, Private McInnis, without regard for his personal safety, exposed himself on top of the hill and opened fire on the attacking forces with an automatic rifle. When his ammunition was exhausted, he dropped into a foxhole and repelled the enemy with hand grenades while reloading his gun. He then courageously took his former position on the hill and delivered devastating fire against the enemy until the attack was repulsed. Unable to walk because of wounds, he crawled to the foot of the hill to receive medical attention and then returned to his post. Later that night, he again displayed extraordinary heroism in assisting in the repulse of two further enemy attacks. Through his gallant initiative and heroic determination to destroy the enemy, Private McInnis materially aided in repulsing several strong attacks and in securing an important hill. His extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
