The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private First Class George Alfred McGee (ASN: 33169848), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 157th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces near *****, Sicily, on 29 July 1943. Private First Class McGee, Machine Gunner, in the face of a determined enemy counterattack, manned his gun with unflinching courage and calm determination, slowed down the attack and took a toll of enemy casualties. Although continually in danger of injury or death from enemy bullets, he gave no ground and finally lost his live over his gun. His spirit of sacrifice so inspired his comrades that the guns were continued in action, which permitted his company to withdraw and reorganize. This successful reorganization with reinforcements forestalled the loss of a valuable ridge which in turn led to the fall of the city which it overlooked. Private First Class McGee’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 45th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
