The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Staff Sergeant Hal Herbert McColl, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 66th Infantry Regiment, 71st Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces near Leisenwald, Germany, on 2 April 1945. Staff Sergeant McColl fearlessly exposed himself to intense enemy fire, crawled to an enemy position, and recaptured a truck from the enemy. With utter disregard for his own safety, this intrepid soldier drove through aimed hostile fire to a field unapproachable for friendly ambulances and evacuated numerous wounded comrades. He then fearlessly volunteered to contact a squad which had become isolated from the main unit. Although the route was swept by withering fire, he led a patrol to successfully complete the hazardous mission. Staff Sergeant McColl’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
