The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Charles I. McCaskey, Jr. (ASN: 0-1326105), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 335th Infantry Regiment, 84th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Germany, on 30 November and 1 December 1944. Under constant enemy fire, Lieutenant McCaskey voluntarily led a patrol which destroyed six by-passed hostile pockets thereby enabling friendly wounded to be evacuated. The following day, after voluntarily crawling over 200 yards exposed to hostile observation and intense fire, he threw several grenades inside a pill box wiping out all resistance. While returning to report to his commanding officer, Lieutenant McCaskey was fatally wounded by an enemy sniper. The extraordinary heroism and courageous actions of Lieutenant McCaskey reflect great credit upon himself and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
