The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Staff Sergeant Winfred Eton McAdoo (ASN: 18011359), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Troop A, 1st Squadron, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, in action against enemy forces at Mount Cabungangan, Leyte, Philippine Islands, on 10 December 1944. Staff Sergeant McAdoo was acting leader of the advance platoon of a cavalry squadron attacking Mount Cabungangan. After his platoon had been repulsed three times by heavy enemy fire from concealed positions, he succeeded in leading it up the hill to a temporary point of advantage. Here he observed that one enemy machine gun formed the key point of resistance, and that it would have to be put out of action before his troops could advance. Without hesitation, he moved forward alone through heavy enemy fire, employed hand grenades against the gun position, and shouted orders and encouragement to the men following him. Though wounded, he reached the position and killed the enemy gunners. Following up this advantage, his men attacked and eliminated the enemy, with only minor casualties and no losses to themselves. Staff Sergeant McAdoo’s heroic leadership and bold rapid action were largely instrumental to the success of our forces in their attack on Mount Cabungangan. Staff Sergeant McAdoo’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
