(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Robert P. Maxfield (ASN: 31026468), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company I, 3d Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Germany, on 2 May 1945. in single-handed, hand-to-hand combat near Bad Aibling, Germany, Sergeant Maxfield killed or captured 16 of the enemy with his rifle and hand grenades. His voluntary action eliminated a Germany strong point and ensured the safety of a key bridge. Sergeant Maxfield’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 3d Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
