The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Armor) John Mundy Mauney (ASN: 0-394459), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 68th Armored Regiment, 2d Armored Division, in action against enemy, on 9 November 1942. On the morning of 9 November 1942, Second Lieutenant Mauney distinguished himself by extraordinary heroism In action in the vicinity of Port Mahdi, French Morocco. He led his command of three tanks against a superior force of enemy tanks and entrenched infantry, fearlessly attacking two tanks and driving both away. In this attack, his tank was hit three times and his periscope rendered useless. Lieutenant Maurey continued to seek out the enemy, standing in his turret exposed to small arms fire, until the enemy withdrew completely from his sector. The successful thwarting of the attempt by the enemy tanks to drive through to the flank and rear of our infantry was essential to the success of the operation. His vigor and example contributed in full measure to the results and to the ultimate success of the entire operation. Second Lieutenant Mauney’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 2d Armored Division, and the United States Army.
