The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Infantry) Carl Paul Matney (ASN: 20805399), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 142d Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at Cassino, Italy, on 11 February 1944. Captain Matney led his company forward to engage the enemy at close quarters. The advance was through rain and snow and under intense enemy small arms fire. At one point a hostile machine gun nest halted the company and Captain Matney crawled alone to a point within a few yards of the gun and, hurling hand grenades, he killed one German, wounding the remaining three and destroying the machine gun. He remained with the advance elements, encouraging the men and skillfully leading them to completion of their mission. Captain Matney’s outstanding leadership, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
