(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Staff Sergeant Maynard Lawrence Martinson (ASN: 36326187), United States Army Air Forces, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as Turret Gunner in a B-25 Bomber of the 380th Bombardment Squadron, 310th Bombardment Group, TWELFTH Air Force, in aerial combat against enemy forces on 12 February 1945, in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations. While under attack from enemy ME-109’s, despite being wounded by enemy cannon fire and knocked out in his turret, he climbed back in and continued firing on the attacking enemy fighters. Staff Sergeant Martinson’s unquestionable valor in aerial combat is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
