Headquarters, U.S. Army-North African Theater of Operations, General Orders No. 24 (April 20, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Carley Lawrence Marshall, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion, 133d Infantry Regiment, 34th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in the vicinity of Fondouk Pass, Tunisia, on 9 and 10 April 1943. Lieutenant Colonel Marshall did, without regard for personal safety, on open ground and under heavy enemy fire, move from squad to squad, reorganized companies that had been broken up as a result of heavy action, and then through his example of fearlessness, inspired his men to follow him to the attack with such vigor that an enemy position hitherto considered impregnable was overrun and captured. Lieutenant Colonel Marshall then proceeded personally to organize the position and held it until relieved by fresh troops. Lieutenant Colonel Marshall’s gallant leadership, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
