Marnell (ASN: 32851123), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as a Squad Leader with Company E, 2d Battalion, 11th Infantry Regiment, 5th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in France, on 15 November 1944. Technical Sergeant Marnell’s unit was in action against German forces during an assault on Metz, France. When his rifle platoon was pinned down by enemy anti-aircraft machine gun fire near the city’s airport, he infiltrated the Germans’ position by crawling along a fire-swept ditch. Under heavy enemy fire, Technical Sergeant Marnell took out the German guns with a grenade, then overtook a separate German position and single-handedly captured seven of its crew. His maneuver allowed American forces to successfully advance on the airport. Technical Sergeant Marnell’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 5th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
