The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Major (Infantry) Sidney Percy Marland, Jr., United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as Chief of Staff with Headquarters, 43d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at Munda Airfield, New Georgia, Solomon Islands, on 3 and 5 August 1943. During the New Georgia campaign, on 3 August 1943, Major Marland went forward to the front lines under constant mortar and machine gun fire to gain valuable information as to enemy dispositions and terrain which was of great assistance in the final capture of Munda Airfield. This mission was accomplished in an area over which the enemy had excellent visibility and observation. On 5 August, during the attack on the airfield, Major Marland observed friendly troops being endangered by the fire from their own tanks. With complete disregard for his own safety, he ran out in front of the firing tanks, in plain sight of enemy positions, gained the attention of the tanks, and succeeded in preventing the action by tanks from endangering their own troops. Major Marland’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 43d Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
