On 23 December, during the battle for Sanananda, a gap had been dug to within fifteen feet of the enemy trench. Held through the night by one of his comrades, at dawn, Private Marion and three comrades crawled forward from the sap and attacked a section of enemy trenches with hand grenades, and thereby enabled the unit to consolidate it’s position and clear it out completely. His extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 32d Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
