The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private First Class Alan Marshall Mancill (ASN: 33787955), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company C, 66th Armored Infantry Battalion, in action against enemy forces near Weyersheim, France, on 16 January 1945. When his company was pinned down by machine gun, rifle, sniper, mortar, and artillery fire while attacking the Steinwald Woods, Private First Class Mancill, defying almost certain death, knelt and fired the rocket launcher at a machine gun nest. Although mortally wounded, he fired an additional half-dozen rounds at the emplacement until the machine gun was eliminated. Private First Class Mancill’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
