Mackowiak (ASN: 15374327), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as a Medical Aidman with the 135th Infantry Regiment, 34th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces near San Vittore, Italy, on 8 January 1944. Private Mackowiak rushed to the exposed knoll where four wounded men lay, administering first aid while the enemy continued to pour fire at him. Then he moved forward to treat a wounded scout. Machine gun bullets tore into both of his hands. Returning to the knoll, he was wounded in both ankles and the shoulder. Private Mackowiak’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 34th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
