The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Infantry) Cleveland A. Lytle (ASN: 0-326170), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as Commanding Officer, 1st Battalion, 358th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division in Northern France. On 18 – 19 August 1944, Major Lytle, moving with the leading elements of his battalion, advanced through ****, France, despite a determined enemy resistance, small arms fire and fire from enemy self-propelled guns. Forced to make personal contact between elements of his command in order to maintain control, Major Lytle was further handicapped by dense smoke from several fires raging in the forest which at times enveloped elements of his command. Nevertheless, on 19 August 1944 his battalion emerged from the forest and captured ****, France. By his heroism, determination and outstanding leadership he not only surmounted an impressive terrain feature but captured the town which was strongly held by the enemy.
