On 10 July 1943, Private Lyngard’s company attacked a fortified enemy pillbox. After advancing within 100 yards of the enemy emplacement, Private Lyngard rushed forward with grenades and scored a direct hit, allowing his company to advance. On 16 July 1943, during an enemy counterattack, he manned a captured 77-mm. gun, organized a gun crew, and knocked out two enemy tanks. He was killed in that latter action. Private Lyngard’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
