The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Margarito G. Lopez (ASN: 38461552), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy, while serving with Troop E, 2d Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, in action against enemy forces near Leyte River, Leyte, Philippine Islands, on 20 December 1944. Private Lopez was a rifleman in a twelve-man patrol reconnoitering through heavy undergrowth to locate an enemy machine gun position. As the patrol advanced, it was suddenly fired upon from the well concealed gun position, and an automatic rifleman was seriously wounded. Private Lopez, with complete disregard of his own safety, quickly crawled toward the wounded man and dragged him back to safety. Then taking the wounded man’s weapon, he launched a fierce one-man assault on the enemy. He killed thirteen Japanese who were manning the machine gun and supporting the position. The remainder of the patrol, inspired by his bold action, then moved forward, killing twenty-seven enemy and destroyed the position. Private Lopez, through his inspiring leadership and outstanding heroism in the face of grave dangers, saved the life of a comrade, killed thirteen enemy and rallied his fellow soldiers to destroy an enemy strongpoint. His extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
