(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Frederick Howard Loomis (ASN: 0-280778), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as Regimental Executive Officer, 358th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces near La Velaisserte, France, on 12 July 1944. When his battalion was pocketed and pinned down under fierce German fire, Colonel Loomis moved alone across an open field, got four medium tanks, led these tanks out in front of the American lines and pointed out targets to the tank gunners. The, Colonel Loomis re-crossed the open field, asked for 10 infantry volunteers and with these men returned to the support of the tanks. His action made is possible for the American to hold a vital crossroads. Lieutenant Colonel Loomis’ extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 90th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
