Loizides (ASN: 32793347), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 179th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces near Mingen, France, on 3 January 1945. Sergeant Loizides saw one of his machine guns put out of action when the gunner was wounded, and started toward thew gun to man it himself. On the way, he was twice seriously wounded and knocked to the ground by enemy fire. Nevertheless, he reached the gun and fired it until it jammed. He was killed while attempting to get the gun in action against, but his surprise fire from a gun the Germans had believed to be out of action had caused many casualties among the enemy. Sergeant Loizides’ extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 45th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
