The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Corporal Louis William Lockner (ASN: 37028179), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 164th Infantry Regiment, 23d Infantry Division (Americal), in action against enemy forces on 25 October 1942, at Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands. As an advance scout for a patrol, Corporal Lockner came upon five of Sumiyoshi’s Japanese combat veterans. Taking them by surprise, he killed all of them. When he realized that many more Japanese were in the area, he took up a position in front of the Browning Automatic Rifles and machine gun placements to protect them from possible grenades. Shortly thereafter the enemy rushed forward and Corporal Lockner fired with devastating effectiveness. Then his rifle jammed and, while he field stripped it in an effort to repair it, the Japanese rushed again. Wounded by rifle fire and a bayonet thrust, Corporal Lockner continued to protect the (BAR) and machine guns until the enemy withdrew. Shortly thereafter he collapsed from loss of blood and succumbed to his wounds. His extraordinary heroism and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
