The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Harold J. Lintz (ASN: 35007579), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 31 July 1943, in New Georgia, Solomon Islands. As his company was pushing forward against the enemy northeast of Munda, the advance guard and point suddenly were fired on by three machine guns 100 yards ahead. The advance guard commander and four enlisted men lay wounded in a position vulnerable to further enemy fire. Corporal Lintz crawled out alone three times through open fire lanes, slowly dragging the wounded back to cover. On his fourth trip he was accompanied by an Aid Man and waited under fire while medical treatment was administered before dragging two more men to safety. Corporal Lintz then participated in the engagement to obliterate the resistance, leading his squad in the destruction of two of the machine guns. His extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 37th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
