The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Technician Fourth Grade Lowell A. Linton (ASN: 39163681), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 1st Armored Regiment, 1st Armored Division. On ** February 1943, near ***, Tunisia, Technician Fourth Grade Linton’s tank was hit by an enemy shell and set afire. He assisted in extinguishing the fire and then climbed back into the driver’s seat and continued in the battle. Technician Fourth Grade Linton stopped to pick up other men whose tanks had been disabled until his tank was hit three more times and set afire again. Technician Fourth Grade Linton ordered his men in and on the tank to jump off while he finally brought it to rest in a ditch. With complete disregard for his own welfare, Technician Fourth Grade Linton helped remove a seriously wounded soldier from the deck of the tank while under heavy and close enemy fire. The extraordinary heroism, devotion to duty, and concern for the welfare of his wounded comrade displayed by Technician Fourth Grade Linton reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
