Headquarters, FIFTH U.S. Army, General Orders No. 6 (January 13, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Howard R. Lieurance (ASN: 0-1302833), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 135th Infantry Regiment, 34th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in October 1943, at Monte Casino, Italy. While preparing to lead his platoon in an attack on a strongly entrenched enemy position, Second Lieutenant Lieurance was mortally wounded by hostile machine gun fire. Although suffering intense pain, he summoned his squad leaders to report to him. Under intense machine gun fire, from positions only 150 yards away and under constant enemy artillery and mortar shelling, he issued his detailed plan of attack. Second Lieutenant Lieurance lapsed into unconsciousness despite prompt first aid treatment, but as a result of his calm and courageous self-control in completing preparations for the attack, his men were inspired to carry out a successful operation. His leadership, bravery, and devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 34th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
